In 1924 a group of individuals within the Felix Memorial Baptist Church felt a need to organize a congregation on the north side of Lexington and began to gather together for such a purpose. In July of 1924 the church was organized and at first met in individual homes and then were able to rent space at the Ross Memorial Presbyterian Chapel.

The first pastor, the Reverend Paul Luttrell, was called in August of 1924.  In September of the same year Grace Baptist Church with a membership of 58 was admitted into the Elkhorn Baptist Association.

The congregation has only had five pastors in the past eighty-one years.  Paul Luttrell served from 1924 to 1928, W. L. Shearer served from 1928 to 1947.

The property the lot on which the main building still occupies was bought in 1925 for one thousand one hundred dollars.  A basement was built in which the congregation first met for approximately five thousand dollars.  An auditorium above the basement began construction in 1930 but was not finished until 1935 due to the Depression.

Tragedy struck in 1943 when the church burned and the congregation had to meet in the Castlewood Gymnasium until the building was rebuilt.  In the years since the congregation has continued to buy property around the original building with some major building additions and renovations.

From the beginning of the congregation’s existence there has been an involvement in mission programs. In recent years the congregation has seen mission volunteers from our congregation serve for short periods in Kenya, Poland, and Russia.  We were honored when two members of our congregation, Daniel and Kristyn Wainright, were appointed to serve for two years as missionaries to France.  They are presently back in the States continuing their education.  Today the congregation emphasizes social ministry projects especially to some of the neighborhoods of North Lexington.
